Overview

Overview

UCATT’s organizational chart was overdue for a complete redesign, having remained unchanged for an extended period.

At the same time, internal restructuring created a need for a more accurate and up-to-date reflection of the department and its teams.

My Role

My Role

Visual Designer: I was responsible for the complete redesign of UCATT's Org Chart, defining its structure, flow, and how each team was represented.

I worked under the mentorship of two senior designers who provided valuable feedback as I worked through this project.

Exploring UCATT's values

What does UCATT represent?

UCATT (University Center for Assessment, Teaching, and Technology) is a University of Arizona resource that supports instructors in creating engaging, innovative learning experiences.

Through seven specialized teams, UCATT offers programs, services, and support to help educators grow and improve learning across the university.

Representing UCATT

UCATT’s core values include collaboration, connection, inspiration, and teamwork.

Based on these principles, a left-to-right organizational chart direction was identified as the most appropriate, as it emphasizes collaboration over a traditional top-down hierarchy.

This approach still communicates structure clearly, while reinforcing a more balanced and inclusive representation where all roles feel equally important.

Exploring types of flows

Choosing a left-to-right flow for the organizational chart was not an easy decision.

I explored multiple ways to represent the department and its teams before arriving at this direction.

Creating the organizational chart

Aligning the design to UCATT's values

One way I felt I could improve the organizational chart was incorporating soft edges and rounded corners throughout the design.

Soft edges convey a greater sense of friendliness and approachability compared to sharp, rigid forms, and more closely align with UCATT's themes of collaboration and connection.

Visualizing my ideas on paper

Once I had a clear direction for the organizational chart, I sketched several layouts to ensure the left-to-right structure worked consistently across each team.

Wireframing the org chart

I used Figma to develop wireframes that explored layout structure and validated that spacing would remain consistent across every page.

Distinguishing the teams

One of the biggest challenges in this project was creating a clear visual distinction between the seven teams that could scale consistently across all pages. I tried multiple variations with colors, icons and styling.

Once I felt the design of all the elements worked well together on the main page, I moved onto all the other pages of the organizational chart.

My Key Learnings

What did I learn?

Don’t settle on your first idea.

I used to move forward with the first few concepts that came to mind, but this project taught me that doing so can leave stronger, more thoughtful ideas unexplored.

Build with scalability in mind.

A key takeaway from this project was the importance of designing a system that is easy to maintain and can adapt to change over time.
